On Star Wars Day, I am reminded of one of my favorite lines from The Empire Strikes Back… (Excuse me while I get a little nerdy.) Han Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca and C3-P0 are attempting to escape from an Empire assault on a Rebel base. Unfortunately, they discover the Millennium Falcon has a malfunctioning hyperspace drive, so they are unable to just light speed away from their pursuers. Han decides to hide out in an asteroid field, but C3-P0 nervously informs Han that the odds are against him. To that, Han says, “Never tell me the odds!”
Since I announced my candidacy for State Representative last November, I have never doubted that the road ahead would be tough. At the same time, I have never ceased to work for you. Yet, my spirits are lifted every day as new volunteers, new supporters, and new contributors join our team. This campaign isn’t about Montgomery money. It is about showing that Etowah County deserves better. When we show that Etowah County deserves better, we can bring jobs home, take leadership to Montgomery, and put honesty back into politics.
Any Democrat running in Alabama is an underdog, but elections from twenty years ago don’t reflect Alabama in 2018. They certainly don’t reflect the energy I see every day in Etowah County. A new energy that began last year, as we worked to elect Doug Jones to the US Senate, has continued through this Democratic Primary all across Alabama. Here in Etowah County, throughout this race, I’ve trusted that real people decide the outcome of elections. Our vote, and our work, matters.
We will defy the odds again on June 5, then November 6.
Your contribution today will directly allow us to begin buying the media time we need to augment our volunteer efforts.
Afterall, like Jyn Orso says in Rogue One, “We have hope. Rebellions are built on hope.”
